ABC Scholars Engage in Career Mentorship with Local Leadership
March 14, 2025
In a meaningful exchange between local leadership and the next generation, A Better Chance of Wilton (ABC Wilton) Scholars visited Wilton’s First Selectwoman Toni Boucher on February 12 and March 5 for inspiring mentorship sessions focused on public service and civic engagement, and business leadership.
The Scholars, who are part of ABC Wilton’s program, engaged in a candid conversation with Boucher about her journey from high school student to becoming Wilton’s First Selectwoman. The session began with a lighthearted icebreaker about favorite foods, setting the tone for an open and engaging discussion.
Boucher shared her personal story, including her experiences as a young student, drawing parallels with the Scholars’ current journey at Wilton High School.
“This mentorship session was valuable because it allowed our Scholars to see firsthand how young people can become involved in local government and public service,” said Julie Fowler, interim Operating Manager for ABC Wilton. “They asked thoughtful questions and engaged in meaningful discussions about their own futures.”
The meeting, which took place at Town Hall, is part of ABC Wilton’s broader mission to provide enriching educational experiences for their Scholars. Since 1996, the program has supported 53 Scholars of color, offering them the opportunity to receive an exemplary education at Wilton High School while living in a supportive residential environment in the town center.
“It was inspiring to hear Toni’s career experiences and her advice to learn from your failures and get up and try again.” said Joanna, a senior in the program. “We all learned something from the time with her, and it’s great to hear different perspectives.”
The meeting with First Selectwoman Boucher represents just one example of how ABC Wilton continues to provide unique opportunities for their Scholars to engage with community leaders and gain valuable insights into potential career paths.
This mentorship session is part of a two-day career exploration program for the ABC Wilton Scholars, demonstrating the program’s commitment to preparing students not just academically, but also for future leadership roles in their communities and corporations.
